Mentees and mentors wanted!
Are you a young earth scientist interested in a unique opportunity to move your career forward? Are you an experienced geoscientist willing to share your knowledge and lend a hand to the new generation?
The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) invites you to participate in the new edition of its International Mentoring Programme. The programme aims at building an informal network of geoscientists that will link up experienced geoscientists with the new generation of earth scientists.
Post-Bachelors students and early-career professionals with less than 4 years of professional experience are invited to submit their applications to participate in this initiative. EFG also welcomes the applications of European Geologist title holders who want to share their knowledge and experience as mentors. Over a fixed period of 9 months, the mentees will receive targeted support from the mentors they have been matched with based on their career plans. | Read more

Obituary Harry McDougal Parker
The Board of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) expresses its heartfelt condolences to Harry’s family. Harry made a lasting impression on all those in the EFG who met him during his long and distinguished international career, both through participation in PERC/CRIRSCO meetings in Europe and through Harry’s membership of the advisory panel for the INTRAW project 2014-2016. He was a consummate professional, combining his wealth of expertise and experience with his considerable and unique communication skills – particularly his special gift of listening more and speaking and writing sparingly, only after first giving his response careful consideration. | Read more

ROBOMINERS defines next steps for the development of its bio-inspired robot miner
On 14 and 15 January 2020, the partners of the EU-funded ROBOMINERS project gathered in Tallinn, Estonia, to discuss the current state of work and define potential scenarios for the robot miner design and application, taking into consideration both economic and political factors such as the need for certain commodities or their criticality in the EU. By developing a bio-inspired robot for mining deposits that are small or difficult to access, ROBOMINERS aims at facilitating EU access to mineral raw materials – including those that are considered as strategic or critical for the energy transition – from domestic resources and thus decreasing the European import dependency. | Read more

Roadmap: European climate law – achieving climate neutrality by 2050
This act writes into law the goal set out in the European Green Deal – for Europe’s economy and society to become climate-neutral by 2050.
This means achieving net-zero emissions for EU countries as a whole, mainly by cutting emissions, investing in green technologies and protecting the natural environment.
The act will ensure that all EU policies contribute to this goal and that all sectors of the economy and society play their part. | Read more

Sweden: Lithotectonic framework, tectonic evolution and mineral resources
Edited by: M. B. Stephens and J. Bergman Weihed
The solid rock mass of Sweden forms a natural field laboratory revealing insight into the westward growth and reworking of one of the planet’s ancient continental nuclei. Three major geological units are exposed in different parts of the country: the western part of the Fennoscandian Shield, mainly sedimentary rocks deposited on this crystalline rock mass and the Caledonide orogen. This volume synthesizes the tectonic evolution of Sweden over more than 2500 million years from the Neoarchean to the Neogene. Following an introduction describing the lithotectonic framework of the country and the organization of the volume, the tectonic evolution is addressed essentially chronologically. Different phases of intracratonic rifting, accretionary orogeny, continent-continent collisional orogeny and platformal sedimentation are identified. Sweden is one of Europe’s major suppliers of metals, and the country’s mineral resources are also presented in the context of the lithotectonic framework. Sweden: Lithotectonic Framework, Tectonic Evolution and Mineral Resources has been designed to interest a professional geoscientific audience and advanced students of Earth Sciences. | Read more

Copernicus MOOC - Learn how to harness the power of space data to innovate and solve societal and business problems
Participants will learn how Copernicus data and services can be used to address societal challenges and generate business opportunities. In particular, they will learn how Copernicus – and space data in general – can be used to support evidence-based public policy, as well as to develop new products and services, open up new markets, improve quality of life, and make the most of limited resources in a sustainable way.
The Copernicus MOOC will be held twice in 2020:
- MOOC 1: February – April 2020
- MOOC 2: September – December 2020
Each MOOC will consist of 12 lessons of 2 hours each, over a period of 12 weeks.
The course is funded by the EU and registration is free and open to all. | Read more
